Mental Health for Elementary (Grades 1-5) ESTEAM® Design Challenge Kits
Designing Solutions for Emotional Well-being
Your support today teaches young students that empathy isn't just a feeling—it’s a foundation for building a better world.
In this ESTEAM® Design Challenge, elementary students take on the vital role of "Innovation Partners" for their peers. By focusing on the challenge of navigating "big feelings," students use the design thinking process to create physical products, services, or apps that support mental health and emotional regulation. It’s a powerful way to combine social-emotional learning (SEL) with entrepreneurial action, showing kids that they can use their creativity to care for others.
What’s Inside Your Design Challenge Kit?
Everything you need to lead a classroom of up to 30 students through 30 mins to 2+ hours of innovation:
- 15 Pre-made Material Bags: Individual kits packed with versatile supplies (pipe cleaners, foil, craft sticks, etc.) to bring "feeling-helper" inventions to life.
- Easy to use Facilitator Guide: Step-by-step instructions and discussion prompts that help you navigate conversations about mental health and design with sensitivity.
- 4 Extension Activities: Tools to expand the challenge into market research, feedback loops, and even basic business modeling.
- 12 Entrepreneurial Mindset Posters: Bold visuals to keep students focused on resilience, empathy, and optimism.
- 1 Deck of Mindset Cards: Quick prompts to reinforce entrepreneurial habits during the design process.
From Empathy to Innovation:
Students explore how to turn kindness into a tangible solution:
- Empathize & Brainstorm: Discussing what "big feelings" look like and what kind of help peers really need.
- Rapid Physical Prototyping: Building a 3D model of a tool or space designed to calm, comfort, or inspire.
- Digital & Service Design: Using provided graphic organizers to wireframe a "Big Feelings App" or storyboarding a service that helps classmates manage stress.
- Pitch & Reflect: Sharing their creations and reflecting on how problem-solving can make their community a kinder place.
